PBA: San Mig Coffee, Meralco move up to share second place pie

MANILA, Philippines (PBA All Philippine Cup): San Miguel Coffee Mixers and Meralco Bolts both won their second game in a row in contrasting ways on Wednesday to move up to join Rain or Shine and Alaska Aces and cause a congestion at the second place in the Eliminations Standings in the 2012-13 All Philippine Cup, the opening conference of the PBA Season.

San Mig Coffee pulled their act their together in the stretch to beat PBA newcomers Globalport 82-78 before Meralco were on target in the first three periods and carved out a facile 99-86 triumph against Barako.

Sol Mercado led Meralco’s charge with a game-high 22 points, 6 rebounds and as many assists with Ronjay Buenafe and Mark Cardona (pic above) adding 16 points each. Reynel Hugnatan had an impressive floor game of 12 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists.

Josh Urbiztondo and Doug Kramer paced Barako with 14 points each. Rico Villanueva had a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds, but had a miserable 1/12 shooting from the field.

Marc Pingris and James Yap sparked the turnaround for San Mig Coffee in the fourth quarter after they had trailed 50-58 at the end of the third.

Pingris went on to finish with 17 points – all of them in the second half – and also collared a game-high 16 rebounds.

Yap with 16 points, 11 of them coming in the fourth quarter, including sparking a 7-2 run which brought San Mig into the game.

Willie Miller had a game-high 19 points to go with his 10 rebounds for Globalport. Vic Manuel had 17 points and 10 rebounds.
