FIBA Asia opens 3x3 events bid process, announces Competitions Rules, structure

BEIRUT, Lebanon (FIBA 3x3): FIBA Asia has announced the Competition Rules, Regulations and Structure and format for the 2013 FIBA Asia 3x3 competitions to be played next year. In all there will be four competitions for FIBA Asia National Federations – Men, Women, U18 Men and U18 Women – all scheduled to be played during March and June 2013, each of which will also act as the qualifying event for various international and world FIBA 3x3 competitions.

Highlighting the features of the competition structure, FIBA Asia Secretary General Hagop Khajirian said: “The aim of the FIBA Asia 3x3 competitions is to involve all the 44 National Federations affiliated to FIBA Asia. We will have 48 teams in each competition.”

Further emphasizing the need to encourage National Federations to work on a proper structure for FIBA Asia 3x3 events, Khajirian said, “We have also set certain eligibility criteria to ensure the same set of players don’t end up playing both the formats of the game.

“The very purpose of the 3x3 format is to bring in more players to basketball. The idea is to widen the base of basketball players and not repeat the same players who have already made their mark in international competitions,” he said.

Talking about the interest shown by the National Federations to host FIBA Asia 3x3 events, Khajirian said: “So far the response is overwhelming. We are yet in the initial stages of the bid process. Therefore I will not comment who will host which event. But the response from the National Federations is an encouraging sign for the 3x3 concept itself.”
