Trailing by 10 points at the start of the fourth period – to a large extent having played second fiddle till then – China looked rather disjointed even when they were clawing their way back into the game.
With Korea – who had called the shots and controlled the pace and proceedings of the game – looking comfortably headed for their fourth gold medal Lee Jonghyun converted both his attempts from the foul-line.
There were tears swelling up in the Chinese supporters when Wang Zhelin chose to seize the moment with a blinding three-pointer to level the score at 91.
Korea yet had a chance to inch their way to victory, needing only to burn 12 seconds on the clock, when Cheon Gibeom committed a five-second violation on the side-line.
China gleefully accepted the opportunity, Wang Zhelin drew the defense towards him giving Gao an open opportunity a drive in down the middle. There was no way Gao was going to miss that.
China thus clinched their 10th gold medal in the history of the competition.
Korea had to be content with their sixth silver medal, having lost to China for the fourth time in a gold medal game.
Wang Zhelin led the scoring for the game with 30 points and 13 rebounds. Gao Shang had 28 points.
Lee Jonghyun had 24 points as Korea’s leader and Choi Junyong 21 points.
