William Jones: First win for Malaysia, first defeat for Japan
 

MIAOLI CITY, Chinese Taipei (William Jones Cup): Cathay Life, the reigning WSBL champions and Chunghua Telecom, who lost to Cathay Life in the 2011-12 WSBL Finals, both continued their unbeaten run in this year’s William Jones Cup women’s competition notching their third successive wins on Monday.

That record is bound to change on Tuesday with the two clashing with each other on the penultimate day of the round robin competition.

Cathay routed the winless Indian National Team 96-56 and Chunghua overcame the Japanese University National Team 83-70 the latter’s first defeat in the competition. Meanwhile, the Malaysian NT posted their first win beating Chapman University, a US Division III college team, 75-50.

Huang Ping-Jen (pic above) had an impressive all-round effort leading Cathay’s life with 20 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 steal and 1 block.

Chen Yi-Feng had 14 points and 7 rebounds with Huan Ying-Li added 15 points.

Geethu Anna Jose ploughed a rather lonely furrow with 14 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals and 2 blocks.

Hsu Chien-Hui’s 21 points with 6 rebounds and 4 assists was the highlight of Chunghua’s triumph. Hsih P[ei-Chun added 18 points and Lui Jia-Wei 10 points along with 8 rebounds.

Mio Shinozaki and Rina Sezaki shared the scoring honors with 17 points each.

Pang Hui Pin carried the burden of Malaysia’s win with 19 points, 3 rebounds and 4 assists. Hee Shook Ying provided support with 13 points and Yap Ching Yee 11 points.

Stephanie Servin’s double-double of 11 points and dozen rebounds paced Chapman.
