Six-game streak notwithstanding, Sun concerned about loopholes

BEIJING, China (2012 London Olympics): Chinese women won six successive games at two venues during the last week or so, but coach Sun Fengwu’s brows were yet knotted with concerns about the weaknesses in key areas.

“Individually we are doing very fine,” Sun Fengwu said adding that “all players irrespective of whether they are young or experienced are playing fine as individual players.”

Sun Fengwu was particularly concerned about the way the team scattered in the third quarter of the game against the Australian Emerging Opals when experienced like Miao Lijie, Nan Chen and Ma Zengyu were rested.

“We hit a trough in the third quarter, which is something I am not very happy about,” Sun Fengwu said.

“It basically showed the youngsters’ tendency to relax and drop the guard the down,” he said.

“This is something that can be overcome only through teamwork. We have to work on maintaining the intensity throughout a game and the ability to stop the opponents from fighting back. These are two very critical areas right now,” he said.

China are drawn with Angola, defending Olympic gold medalists USA and three teams that will come through FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament for Women in Group A of the Prelim Round at the 2012 London Olympics.
